Crohn’s and Colitis are diseases of the gut, that affect every part of the body. Stigma and misunderstanding around the conditions, means thousands are suffering in silence. It takes guts to talk about Crohn’s and Colitis - so stand with us and everyone affected by these devastating conditions on 1-7 December.

What is Ulcerative Colitis - UC?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is considered to be an autoimmune disease. Normally the body’s immune system works to defend the body against infection and invading microbes. In autoimmune disorders, this goes awry and the immune system attacks body’s own cells.

There are billions of harmless bacteria present in the gut. Ulcerative Colitis, the immune system targets these harmless bacteria inside the colon and in turn attacks the tissues of the colon, causing it to become inflamed.

The inflammation leads to formations of ulcers and painful sores oozing mucus and pus. Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis include: abdominal pain, bloody stools, diarrhoea and urgency, fever, rectal pain, weight loss, malnutrition.

What is Crohns Disease - CD?

Crohns Disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that may effect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, signs and symptoms often include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, which may contain bloody of flare up is severe, fever and weight loss.

What is Indeterminate Colitis - IC?

Indeterminate colitis refers to 10–15% of cases of inflammatory bowel disease in which there is difficulty distinguishing between ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) in the colectomy specimen, but a certainty of one or both diseases. For some patients earlier diagnosed from symptoms, this may be the diagnosis after colon removal and further investigation.

All forms of IBD may have other complications that can occur outside the gastro tract such as anaemia, rashes, mouth sores, nausea, arthritis, inflammation of the eyes and fatigue. They also increase the risk of bowel cancer.
